O WebCite (diferente do cache Google, do DOI, Wayback Machine) permite criar e manter o registo de fontes web citadas em artigos, sobre a forma de arquivo permanente, sendo livre a sua utilização por académicos, estudantes e investigadores:
"(...) is a tool specifically designed to be used by authors, readers, editors and publishers of scholarly material, allowing them to permanently archive cited Internet references. It is used by an increasing number of authors and journals to ensure future availability of cited webreferences for scholars reading the citing article in 1, 3, 5 or 10 years from now."
